Horticulture can seem complicated at first, if you do not know what you are doing. If you plan on gardening the natural way, you might have to understand certain complexities like the soil’s PH balance and bug fighting concoctions. If you are a newbie, getting into organic gardening can be daunting. To succeed, you must learn as much as possible about organic horticulture principles. For valuable advice, keep reading.

Properly lay your sod. Make sure you prepare your soil before you lay any sod down. Break the soil into fine tilth and make sure you remove any weeds as well. The next step is compacting your soil and carefully leveling it. Thoroughly moisten the soil. Avoid laying your sod in straight rows with all of the seams lining up. Instead, stagger the rows for a more pleasing visual effect. Pat down the sod and fill any gaps with soil. Sod must be watered every day for about two weeks, and then it will have rooted and be completely ready to be walked on.

The handles of your tools can double as clever rulers. Handles of things such as rakes, hoes or shovels make excellent measuring instruments. Place the handles on the floor to measure the distance between them. Use a permanent marker to label distances. Now, the next time you’re down in the garden, you’ll have a handy ruler without needing to look anywhere else.

Plant some perennials in your garden that repel slugs. If slugs or snails find their favorite perennials in your garden, they’ll snack all night. When you wake up in the morning, there will be very little left of your plants. Young plants with smooth and tender leaves are their favorite. Some perennials are not preferred meals for snails and slugs, especially if their foliage is hairy and tough, or tastes bad. Examples of these slug-proof plant varieties include achillea, euphorbia, and helleborus, to name a few.

Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
