Tending a garden is a relaxing past-time that can also serve as therapy. Getting the right kind of soil and knowing when to start planning are two important parts of gardening. Some basic advice will give budding gardeners the information needed to get started.

Learn how to properly lay sod. Before laying the sod, the soil must be prepared. Remove any weeds, and break the soil up into a fine tilth. Compact the soil firmly but lightly, and make certain it is flat. The soil should always receive adequate moisture. The sod should be laid in staggered rows, with the joints offset from one another. After the sod is in place, go over the surface to ensure everything is level. Use loose soil to fill in any gaps between seams. Your sod should be watered everyday for at least two weeks, then it will root itself and walk on it.

To prevent shocking your plants, you must gradually introduce new temperatures and other conditions to them. Start by placing your plants outside for a few hours only. Gradually increase the the time they spend outside over a one week period. By the end of the week, your plants should be ready to make the big move with no problem!

Start your plants in containers, and then transplant the seedlings into the garden later on. By allowing them to sprout first, you are increasing the odds of a seedling reaching maturity. The period between plantings will also be shorter. Using this method, you can remove the mature plants, then put the seedlings in their places.

Try growing some cat grass or wheat grass in the vicinity of the plants that your cat likes to eat. Additionally, use your cat’s keen sense of smell to your advantage. Citrus fruit peels and mothballs both smell horrible to cats, so put them on the soil near the plants your cat likes to eat.

Whenever you are planting a veggie garden, it is vital that you place them in a location where sun shines down on them for six or more hours per day. Many vegetables need about this much sun to grow quickly. Some flowers have the same requirement for growth.

Always have a plan for the garden prior to the start of planting it. Having a planting plan will help you correctly identify the young plants once they start to sprout. It’s also a good way to keep smaller plants from getting swallowed up by the rest of your garden.

If many of the plants in your garden grow close to the ground, some horticulture knee pads will prevent pain and knee injuries. You will end up spending a good deal of time on your knees and this can cause a lot of pain by the end of the day. Pick up a good pair of horticulture knee pads to help cushion your knees.

As mentioned, horticulture is rewarding, but you need a wealth of information to really tend a garden well. If you follow the correct advice and plan your garden properly, your garden will flourish in no time. Use this advice to enjoy your own beautiful garden.
