Organic horticulture can either be a wonderful hobby, or a nuisance nightmare. If you want to be a great organic gardener, follow these hints.

You may be able to re-pot some plants to bring indoors for the winter. Think about saving your resistant plants or the expensive ones. Carefully dig near the roots and transfer those plants into a flower pot.

Garden vegetables should be planted in areas of the ground that receive a minimum of six hours of daily sunlight. Many of the vegetables need a lot of sun, so they can grow right and at a faster pace. It’s also the same for some types of flowers.

Are you one of the millions who loves some fresh mint leaves, yet you absolutely hate the way they tend to take over any garden they are planted within? That’s why it’s better to place mint in containers rather than letting it have free rein in your garden. By using a separate containment unit, you are limiting the plant’s ability to spread its roots and subsequently grow like wildfire. You can even plant the entire pot so that it still looks just like another plant in your garden.

Natural materials or some other plants can be used in your garden for keeping away pests. Plant marigolds or onions around other vegetables to keep slugs away from them. Insects can be deterred if you use wood ash instead of mulch around trees and shrub seedlings. These methods remove the need for harsh chemical pesticides.

Involve your children in horticulture. Toiling together in the garden brings your family closer together and offers many different opportunities to learn new things and instill green values.

You should add a two to three inch layer of organic mulch to your flower bed. Using this much mulch retards weed growth, locks in moisture, and ensures that your plants are well-nourished. This will also make your flowers appear beautiful and finished all year long.

When planting seeds in containers, plant the seed roughly three times deeper than the seed’s size. But, is important to realize the some seeds ought not be covered, as they need complete exposure to sun. Two of the common examples are petunias and ageratum. Always be sure to check online or with the company you’re purchasing the seeds from as to their sunlight needs.

Over-watering your plants can be harmful, because roots that are drowning in water cannot effectively pull nutrients out of the soil. Before heading out to water your plants, check the weather to see if rain is included in the immediate forecast. If rain is on its way, you are probably safe to skip watering duties for the day.

As is evident by the information in this article, organic horticulture involves much more than one might initially think. Getting your organic garden to produce rich results requires much effort and patience, but you will find the end results quite worth it. By following the above tips, you are well on your way to increasing your organic horticulture skills.
