Popular herb and decorative plant. Bay leaves are extensively used in cooking and they are also useful evergreen shrubs. Bay can be grown in a number of ways. It thrives in containers, especially if watered regularly and positioned in a sheltered spot. In the garden, bay trees grow as a large bushy shrub or small tree, reaching a height of 7.5m (23ft) or more. As they get larger, they can also be trained into interesting shapes. Bay will withstand temperatures down to around minus 5 degrees but wind will damage them more. If grown in a cold area they are probably best grown in a container and move to a sheltered spot in the winter.
